Naples National Archaeological Museum
The National Archaeological Museum of Naples ('Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli (MANN)') has a world-famous status. In the MANN you will find a large collection of objects from antiquity. The first two floors are mainly devoted to the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. These two cities were destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79. On these floors of the museum you will find all kinds of different types of frescoes and mosaics.
Objects from Pompeii and Herculaneum
For example, from Pompeii you can admire a mosaic from Faun's house. Here you see Alexander the Great fighting the Persians. You will also find a mosaic by Dioskurides (a famous stamp and cameo carver from Rome) from Cicero's villa. In this mosaic you see a group of itinerant musicians. You will also find portraits, such as those of the wealthy banker Cecilius Giocondus. Other highlights include furniture and statues from the Temple of Isis in Pompeii and the papyrus scrolls from Villa dei Papiri in Herculaneum.
Representations of the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum
At the National Archaeological Museum you will learn through computer animations, photos and film footage how the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum by the Mount Vesuvius volcano has occurred. You can also see casts of people who tried to save their belongings. There are also countless rooms with sculptures, bronze, glass and ceramics.
More to see in the Naples Archaeological Museum
You will also find other objects from Antiquity in the national museum. There is the Farnese collection that was found in the 16th century during excavations of the Thermes of Caracalla in Rome. Most famous is the Farnese bull, one of the best preserved statues from the Roman era. Also part of the museum is a large jewelry collection, including the largest gem (cameo) in the world and there is a special section on prehistory. History buffs should not miss a visit to the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.
